Traumatic Brain Injury Program
What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?
A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), also known as head injury, is an injury to the brain caused by external force to the skull. Examples: motor vehicle accidents, falls, physical assault, and violence including gun shot wounds.
Common symptoms that someone with a TBI may experience: difficulties in concentration, organization, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, memory deficits, and building relationships. Individuals may have difficulty with impulse control and anger control.
The TBI Program is a five days a week program which focuses on daily living skills, offering workshops on personal financing, including creating and maintaining a budget, meal preparation, and practicing safe and healthy choices in their home and work environments. Goodwill also assists people with a TBI as they work towards employment again, offering job readiness classes, work skills training, and computer classes. The TBI Program also has many weekly classes dedicated to activities that assist in strengthening memory and cognitive skills. In addition to the weekly schedule, the TBI Program also schedules outings in the community in which everyone is invited to participate in. There is also a monthly TBI Support Group for both survivors and caregivers that meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm-7:30pm.
"I enjoy being here. I can see people who are in my position and relate to them and share my thoughts." - David T., TBI Program participant
