WORK EXPERIENCE TRAINING
Project SEARCH:
Project SEARCH is a partnership between business and education. Project SEARCH is a national program which began in 1996 at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio. The concept of the program is to prepare students in their final year of school to transition to full time employment. Students serve as interns and learn the soft skills necessary to maintain employment as well as learning work skills that are complex and systematic.
Students work as interns approximately six hours a day. In addition, they receive one hour of vocational and independent life skill training at the work site instructed by a certified teacher.
The goal at the end of the school year is for the student intern to obtain employment with the skills learned in the Project SEARCH Program at the host business site or another business in our community.
Project Employment:
Project Employment is also partnership between business and education. Project Employment is a program for students out of high school with a Special Diploma. These students will serve as interns three hours a day at the employer worksite and three hours a day at the school taking classes of their choice to increase skills in specific areas to meet their personal goals. Students will be provided on the job training, increase their stamina and learn the soft skills necessary to maintain employment.
A student may choose to become employed at any time in the program or continue to participate in the Project SEARCH Program.
Culinary Training:
The Culinary Training at The Transition to Life Academy will provide students that are interested in a food service career, the basic skills needed to obtain employment in the field. They will be exposed to a variety of cooking experiences.
Students will learn safety, sanitation, food preparation, inventory control, and customer service. They will be trained and certified in SafeStaff, a state mandated certification needed for employment in the food-service industry.
Pre-Vocational Training:
Students will attend the Pre-Vocational Training program at the school full time. They will receive a daily schedule of classes such as Independent Living, Career Prep, Computer Classes, Reading, and Math. Classes will be designed to instruct students on skills for adult life with the focus of skills needed for work and independence.
Vocational guidance and practical lessons will be taught in the classrooms and then applied in the community with visits to businesses for job shadowing, shopping and leisure and recreation. Instruction in Travel Training is provided in Community Based Training.
Employment Services:
An Employment Consultant will work with students to assist them in a career search. Guidance will be provided to the student to ensure success when employment is obtained. All factors such as interest, strengths, and skill level will be identified.
Job Coaching – Supported Employment:
All students will receive initial job coaching when they begin employment. It is a joint decision between the student, employer, and job coach when the student is stable with employment and the job coach should begin to fade services.
Job Coaching will be provided as an ongoing service to ensure employment success. Students will be visited a minimum of one time per week (more if needed) throughout their employment while enrolled at The Transition to Life Academy .
